PARADE TIME! Larchmont’s resident weather guy Chris Knowles is forecasting partly sunny skies and 75 degree weather for THURSDAY evening. Perfect weather conditions for Larchmont’s traditional summer kick off event, the Memorial Day Parade. The Parade begins on Chatsworth Avenue near the Larchmont Train Station at 7 p.m. sharp. Representatives from the five branches of the military along with Village and Town officials, scout troops, bag pipers, marching bands, and emergency vehicles will make their way down Palmer Avenue to Larchmont Avenue and end at the Village Hall. Come out and cheer them on. This event is a not to be missed.

OPENING DAY The Larchmont Farmers’ Market returns to Lot 3 at the train station on SATURDAY from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Doctor Pickle returns along with twenty-two other vendors. A complete list of vendors can be found here. Les Tappan Zigues is giving a musical performance between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

HIT THE BEACH Lifeguard, assume your position. Manor Park Beach officially opens for the summer season on SATURDAY at 10 a.m. Specials all weekend at the Snack Bar.

BIKINI SEASON Time to pull out the bathing suit. Restore your core with the Larchmont Newcomers’ Club (LNC) at Excel Martial Arts on THURSDAY, 7:30 p.m. Following the one hour long, high calorie burning and muscle toning class, enjoy refreshments and socializing with fellow LNC members. WELCOME HOME ENGINE ONE This year’s Larchmont Historical Society (LHS) House Tour is a special one. In addition to touring 3 magnificent Manor homes, the newly restored Engine One will be unveiled at a reception held at 14 Pryer Lane, a turn of the century Victorian home participating in the House Tour. Engine One is a 1922 American LaFrance fire engine that served Larchmont until 1948. For the past three years, it’s been in Maine going through a museum-quality restoration. Engine One is now back in Larchmont looking all shiny and new. The reception and house tour are running concurrently from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on SATURDAY. FLOWER POWER Larchmont Newcomers' Club members are gathering at The Flower Bar to learn about flowers and floral arranging on WEDNESDAY, 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Everyone will get to take home their own Spring floral design. Tickets are $25. BYOB. Light snacks served. Register here.

TAG SALE The Daums – Michelle, Justine, Fred and dog Shai—are gearing up for their annual tag sale on SATURDAY to benefit Save the Children. This is the 13th year that the Daums have hosted the tag sale, and it’s one of the biggest held in Westchester. If you are interested in donating items, feel free to drop them off this week in the Daum’s driveway at 54 Beach Avenue. They welcome everything and anything! Among the items already donated: Indonesian Teak Cabinet, inversion table, Nordic track, futon and a Judith Ripka bracelet. SPANISH MUSIC Join the Westchester Chorale at Larchmont Avenue Church on SATURDAY, 8 p.m. for an evening of Spanish Music. The program will showcase the renowned guitarist, Simon Powis, who will accompany the Chorale for “Romancero Gitano” by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, and “10 Cançons Tradicionals,” by Manuel Oltra. The Oltra pieces, a grouping of folk songs from various regions of Spain, further ventures into new territory with some lyrics being set in Catalan, a language that rarely appears in choral music. The Chorale’s Music Director, Douglas Kostner, will conduct. Espana Wine & Tapas Bar is providing Spanish wines and tapas for a post-concert reception. Tickets are $25 ($20 for Seniors and $10 for Students) and may be purchased here.

FOR KIDS Children ages 8 and older are invited to a special screening and discussion of the timeless movie, The Wizard of Oz on SUNDAY, 1 p.m. at the Larchmont Village Center. Creepy Monkeys, Tornadoes, Black Curtains Oh My!

CONGRATS Larchmonter and Mamaroneck High School Senior Sam Schneider along with three other local students (seen here with Assemblyman George Latimer) were selected to participate in the League of Women Voters' Students Inside Albany Day. The annual event is sponsored by the New York State League's Education Foundation to increase awareness of representative government.

BOOK & MOVIE Film Critic Rob Goldstone hosts a discussion and screening of the Lost Horizon TOMORROW (TUESDAY) at 10 a.m. The 1930s novel by James Hilton and subsequent movie directed by Frank Capra centers around five people stranded on an island paradise known as Shangra-la after their plane crashes. HELLO DARKNESS MY OLD FRIEND Join legendary New York disc jockey Pete Fornatale for a walk down memory lane with the iconic '60s singers Simon and Garfunkel. Pete has written several books about the poetic and harmonious duos. In his insightful, informative and entertaining discussion, he will talk about Simon and Garfunkel’s monumental album, Bookends, which Pete thinks is the greatest concept record of the 1960s. FOR KIDS Local elementary schools are out early on WEDNESDAY for the 2nd annual NOGA Soccer “Survivor” Challenge soccer clinic at 12:30-2:30pm at Harbor Island Park. WHEN DOODY CALLS “Oh no, he (she) won’t go,” a familiar cry heard from parents going through the inevitable process of potty training their child. The potty training rite of passage begins somewhere between the ages of 18 months to 3 years and can be a stressful time for families. Parents employ all sorts of tricks of the trade: bribery with M&M candies, target practice with Cheerios, sticker rewards, kiddie toilets and the like. Ultimately most children successfully toilet train, but there are those stubborn few who refuse or perhaps have special needs and struggle to potty train. What to do then? That’s where Dr. Fredric Daum comes in. Dr. Daum, a Larchmont resident and father of five himself, is a Harvard educated Pediatric Gastroenterologist. He is considered a leading expert in the area of children who are very challenging to toilet train. Since school regulations and issues of socialization dictate that children toilet train by a certain age, parents may feel very much under pressure to get their child toilet trained before they head off to nursery school or summer camp. Dr. Daum works with families to make this happen. In addition to treating children in the New York area, Dr. Daum runs a potty training program through his website DoctorDaum.com. He coaches families via the phone from all over America and even as far away as Israel. He creates a toilet training program for each specific child and then checks in with the parents several times a day to offer guidance and support. The end result? Improved self-esteem for the child and decreased anxiety in the home. Dr. Daum is participating in the Sixth Annual Autism Fair this SUNDAY at the Westchester County Center in White Plains. If you happen to be attending, stop by his booth to say hello.

VIVA LA FRANCE French Scholar and former Parisian ex-pat Dr. Lana Elizabeth Hamon is speaking at the Woman’s Club of Larchmont (WCL) Club Day on FRIDAY, 1 p.m. at Larchmont Avenue Church. Lana’s lecture is entitled: “Loire Valley Tour: Chateaux and Cuisine," a discussion of French food and architecture. For more information visit the WCL’s website.

Which health food store from a neighboring town is looking at space in Larchmont? An exciting development for local vegans.

ANDY’S PURE FOOD Garlic shot anyone? Healthy living and vegan options are now readily available in Larchmont. Andy’s Pure Food, the popular vegan eatery from Rye (and Scarsdale) recently opened a location at 130 Chatsworth Avenue. Andy Ozgur, a Larchmont resident owns the expanding health food empire and tapped one of his trusted employees, Onur Ozkoc (pictured) to manage the new store. Andy’s motto is to enjoy nature’s wonderful bounty in its peak form – raw, wild and vegan. No additives are added to their juices and smoothies. The same goes for their freshly made soups, which are simply steamed and pureed. The salad bar is extensive and features both raw and cooked vegetables. Andy’s Pure Food also offers 3-Day and 7-Day juice cleanses to rejuvenate and purify the body while shedding some extra pounds. Onur swears by the cleanses and does one every month. He’s gone as long as 15 days and says he feels fantastic afterwards. For those who have never tried a juice cleanse, but are interested, Onur recommends the 3-Day Synergy Cleanse. The five Sound Shore Superwoman being honored are Anne Avenius of St. Augustine’s Church, Deborah Blatt of The Sharing Shelf of Family Services of Westchester, Melinda Lehman of Larchmont-Mamaroneck Hunger Task Force, Marissa Massa of Our Lady of the Rosary Church, and Missy Palmisciano of County Harvest. CRUSH WINE BAR Larchmont’s got a new Crush and for many locals, it’s going to be love at first site. Crush Wine Bar, located at 1985 Palmer Avenue, is the new hot spot for a first date, girls' night out, or a late night bite after a movie at the nearby Larchmont Playhouse. The transformation from the old Palmer Art Studio to a wine bar is quite stunning. When you walk into this narrow bar with deep purple walls, hardwood floors and plush lounge seating, you feel like you're somewhere in downtown Manhattan--a sophisticated yet casual vibe. Twin silver chandeliers, a fireplace and candlelit tables create a warm and inviting atmosphere. That's just the way owner Jennifer Deutsch (seen here with her Executive Chef Alex Garcia, who regularly appears on the Food Network) wants it. Jennifer knows a thing or two about wine having spent thirty years working in the wine import and distribution business. More recently Jennifer worked in the corporate banking world and was looking for an exit strategy. After brainstorming with her daughter Rebecca, Jennifer sketched the Crush logo on a napkin and a wine bar was born. Jennifer chose Larchmont for the location because she likes that it is truly a "walking town", one of the few in Westchester. She also loves the proximity of Crush's space to the movie theater. It reminds her of a favorite wine bar she frequented while living in Charlotte, North Carolina. That bar too was near a movie theater and proved to be quite a popular place. At Crush, Jennifer wants her customers to feel comfortable, not intimidated when ordering wine. Wines are listed in different categories (i.e. Rich and Spicy, Crisp Light Whites, Rich and Buttery Whites) to make ordering easier. If you still can't decide what you want to drink, Crush offers a 3 oz glass of wine for half the price of a full glass. That way you can sample one or several wines until you find one to your liking. In addition to wine, Crush offers a full bar including beer and specialty cocktails like the School Girl Crush, the Secret Crush and the Palmer Old Fashioned. For his part, Chef Alex has created a unique menu of salads, tostas, charcuterie & cheese, and small plates such as sliders, dates wrapped in bacon, crab meat crepes, mini mama meatballs, and shrimp potstickers. FUNDRAISER The Pine Brook Association (PBA) is on a mission to renovate Pine Brook Park (at the corner of Pine Brook Drive and Palmer Avenue). Thanks to local families, PBA has already raised $30,000 towards the project goal (to the right is a rendering of the renovated park). There’s still another $10,000 needed to be raised. The community is invited to come out for a good cause and a good time. Activities include toddler play, music and dancing for kids, and family yoga. There will also be a raffle with great prizes. CONGRATS The Mamaroneck Schools Foundation recently awarded 17 grants totaling $200,000, spanning all grade levels and reaching all six district schools for the 2012-2013 school year. The grants reached all types of students through a vast range of curricula, including Science and Mathematics,Technology, Literacy and Enrichment, the Arts, Special Education and At - Risk Students, and Student Wellness. These grants were made possible by the generosity of district parents, community members and local businesses.

MAKING HISTORY The Larchmont Historical Society (LHS) celebrates Women in History Month TOMORROW (TUESDAY) with a reading and discussion by author Deborah Baker. Deborah will read from her book, The Convert: A Tale of Exile and Extremism, where she chronicles the life journey of Margaret Marcus, a Larchmont native born in the 1930s, who converted from Judaism to Islam. The event takes place at St. John’s Episcopal Church at 1:30 p.m. Admission is FREE for LHS members; $5 for guests. Deborah is available to sign books after the discussion.

PURIM Local author/illustrator Amalia Hoffman pays a visit to Larchmont Library TODAY at 4 p.m. where she will act out her story Purim Goodies, dressed in costume for children ages 4 to 7. She’ll also share how to make yummy hamantaschen.

GREEN SCREEN The Green Screen Film Festival continues this week. The film No Impact Man is being shown TONIGHT, 7:30 p.m. at the Mamaroneck Town Center. Co-Director and Cinematographer Justin Schein will be on hand for a question and answer session after the film. BABYSITTER TRAINING Calling all babysitter wannabes. The Town of Mamaroneck’s Department of Recreation is offering an interactive Red Cross course designed for adolescents 11 to 15 years of age, that provides participants with hands-on learning experiences. Participants receive a top quality Babysitter’s Guide, a check list and certification if they meet the course requirements. This is excellent training for babysitters and those wishing to start babysitting. The three-day course is $70 for residents and $90 for non-residents. The class starts TOMORROW (TUESDAY) from 3:45 p.m to 6 p.m. in the Hommocks Community Room and meets again for two consecutive Tuesdays.

FIRE ON ICE Firefighters from the Town and Village of Mamaroneck take to the Hommocks ice on SATURDAY for the Third Annual Fire on ice hockey game. The puck gets dropped at 7 p.m. Proceeds from this year’s game benefit Milo Delvecchio, the young son of Robert Delvecchio, a Town of Mamaroneck employee and firefighter, who was killed in a tragic accident on the job last November.

ANTIQUE SHOW Larchmont’s Annual Antique Show is being held on SATURDAY and SUNDAY from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Mamaroneck High School. This antique and collectibles show attracts about 45 dealers from the Mid Atlantic region and features antique furniture, porcelain, pottery, china and vintage glass as well as paintings, lithographs, clocks, rugs, ephemera, memorabilia and other vintage collectibles. GREEN SCREEN Larchmont along with the Village and Town of Mamaroneck are presenting the Green Screen Film Festival, a week long event screening eight films starting next weekend. The films encompass a full range of environmental topics, from food to energy, natural gas supplies to extreme ice climbing. The festival kicks off on SATURDAY, 10 a.m. with a special screening of the new Dr. Seuss movie, The Lorax at Larchmont Playhouse. Tickets are being sold at a reduced price of $5. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY This week Larchmont’s Pet Rescue celebrates its 30th Anniversary of finding homes for cats and dogs. A gala, already sold out, will be held on FRIDAY at the VIP Club in New Rochelle. While tickets are no longer available, donations are still being accepted. Donate them this SUNDAY from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. St. Augustine Church is collecting cookware, dishware, small appliances, utensils, sheets, towels, small lamps and bath items to benefit the Little Sisters of the Assumption in East Harlem. All donations may be dropped off at the school cafeteria.

CONGRATS Mamaroneck High School Seniors Spencer Greenberg and Joey Kaplan were recently elected Co-Presidents of Teens for the Community, a group of 40 high school students from Larchmont, Mamaroneck and New Rochelle who get together, for a few hours every week, and reach out to people in need with many different community service projects. GIVE BACK WITH A BACKPACK Phuse, a local social action club from Mamaroneck High School, is collecting school supplies for an impoverished American Indian Reservation in South Dakota that is in great need. At the Lakota Pine Ridge Reservation, more than 90% of the population lives below the federal poverty line, unemployment wavers between 85% and 90%, the life expectancy on the reservation is approximately 46 for men and 52 for women (that's the shortest life expectancy for a community anywhere in the Western Hemisphere outside Haiti) and perhaps worst of all, the school drop out rate is up to 70%. Phuse is partnering with the Lakota Pine Ridge Children's Enrichment Project and taking part in the annual Fill A Backpack Drive to help provide children with necessary school supplies. This project collects items like spiral notebooks, composition notebooks, graph paper calculators, rulers, pens, pencils, markers, scissors, and of course backpacks (other materials like sports equipment, shoes and books are welcome). Donation boxes are stationed at Mamaroneck High School and Stephanie's Kloset. Items may be dropped off now until March 1st.

FOR KIDS Staycation this week with the kids? Keep ‘em busy. Hommocks Ice Rink will be operating on a special schedule TODAY through FRIDAY (11 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.)….Sheldrake Environmental Center is holding Presidents' Week Vacation Camp all week from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Children can explore the trails, create eco-crafts and enjoy story time…The Larchmont Library is hosting several fun events for kids. TOMORROW (TUESDAY) is the Mardi Gras Parade for ages 5 and older. Children will march to the tunes of bayou music wearing beads and funky masks that they create during the activity. On WEDNESDAY, Friends of the Larchmont Public Library are sponsoring “Talking Drums with Kobla Dente“ for ages 4 through 12. Kobla, a world class drummer and percussionist, will help the audience explore African culture through songs, dance and movement activities. And finally on THURSDAY, children ages 4 and older are invited to attend Pirate School with David Engel. David (aka Billy Bones) will teach Larchmont's boisterous buccaneers zany lessons on how to stand, talk, laugh, eat and sing like pirates. All mates are encouraged to come in costume. This event is also sponsored by the Friends of the Larchmont Public Library.

FAT TUESDAY Carnevale, the Italian version of Mardi Gras will be celebrated TOMORROW (TUESDAY) night with good food and music at Anna Maria’s Restaurant. Local Neapolitan singer Nancy Corvino will be joined by fellow Italian singers Camille Coppola and Vinny LoPreto to serenade diners with Italian and American favorites. LENTEN SERIES St. Augustine Church kicks off a three-part Lenten Series beginning this SATURDAY in the school cafeteria following 9 a.m. mass. Father Joseph T. Lienhard, SJ, a professor of Theology at Fordham University will discuss the Creed of Catholics in terms of where is comes from, what does it mean and why does it exist. LIVING THE CHOCOLATE DREAM Imagine if your job was to travel all over the world, eat chocolate and blog about it. Sound too good to be true? Not for one Larchmonter. Meet Clay Gordon, the world’s first professional independent chocolate critic. How did a guy from the West coast, who studied photography at Rhode Island School of Design and worked for tech companies, end up in a job that Willa Wonka would envy? It happened 18 years ago on one fateful day in Cannes, France while Clay was on a business trip. He stumbled upon a gourmet food shop with a fabulous display of assorted chocolate bars. He purchased a stash and shared them with his friends at a dinner party back in his Manhattan apartment. He was struck by his friends’ reactions. Chocolate, Clay discovered, was a very personal experience similar to people’s unique preferences related to wine, scotch, or coffee. It was a “light bulb moment" for Clay. He saw a marketing opportunity. At the time, there was no formal program available to learn how to be a chocolate critic. Clay had to create his own. He spent seven years researching chocolate, identifying mentors and traveling around the world to cacao producing countries like Bolivia, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama and Venezuela (Clay took the picture to the left in a Bolivian Cacao field with his iPhone 4 using the Hipstamatic app). Clay’s “Bucket List” goal is to visit every cacao growing country. Indonesia and West Africa are next on the list.

In 2001, Clay created the Chocophile Blog to share his adventures in chocolate. Six years later, Clay released his first book, Discover Chocolate: The Ultimate Guide to Buying, Tasting, and Enjoying Fine Chocolate. The book was a finalist in the Technical/Reference category in the 2008 IACP (International Association of Culinary Professionals) Cookbook awards. An updated edition is forthcoming. Around the same time the book was released, Clay launched DiscoverChocolate.com and later The Chocolate Life, the largest online community to discuss all things chocolate. Members include cacao farmers, celebrity chefs and chocolate makers from 140 countries. Clay also holds events and conducts chocolate tastings. While we are on the topic of chocolate, it is after all, Valentine's Day. Clay has some advice for those of you purchasing chocolate for your loved one. First, get to know your local chocolatier like your grandmother knew her butcher. Ask your chocolatier questions like: "What are the big movers today?"; "What is new?"; "What is fresh?"; "What's your favorite?"; and "Which chocolate represents your best work?". Don't worry about packaging. Don't concern yourself with quantity. Rather focus on selecting a few pieces of fresh and quality chocolate that you think your loved one will enjoy. If they are adventurous, select something exotic like chocolate with wasabi. More timid? Select something safe and comforting with carmel or nuts. When you present your chocolates to your Valentine, be sure to tell a story on how you chose the chocolates for them. Show them that you listen, care, and made an effort to handpick the most perfect chocolate for them. And what about Clay himself? What kind of chocolate does he want for Valentine's Day? The answer did not come easy for the man who's traveled around the globe consuming the best chocolate offered on the planet. He finally admitted that he has a personal preference for "dark milks", which have the intensity of dark chocolate, the creaminess of milk chocolate without too much sweetness. Sounds good to us!

LOVE EARTH Larchmont resident Lynn Crowley is a certified presenter of The Climate Project, an organization founded by former Vice President Al Gore to address climate change issues. Lynn will give the presentation to members of At Home on the Sound this WEDNESDAY, 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Rectory Meeting Room at Sts. John and Paul Church.

LOVE RUNNING It was a long standing Larchmont tradition, and it's coming back this summer! Larchmont Run 2012 will be held on Friday evening, June 15th. The family fun event includes a 1 mile fun run and a competitive 5K. A BBQ and music follows at Flint Park. The Village of Larchmont Department of Recreation is currently seeking sponsors at several levels: $100 (Bronze), $250 (Silver), $500 (Gold) and Champion ($1,000). LOVE COMMUNITY A shout out to Mamaroneck High School’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). Chapter Reporter Monie Kaneti writes: “For the second year in a row Mamaroneck High School FBLA hosted its Flapjack Breakfast Fundraiser for Pediatric Cancer Foundation. Though the closing of the Mamaroneck Applebees was a drawback, the group easily substituted the New Rochelle Applebees in its place. Moni Kaneti, Chapter Reporter, sold 39 tickets, Carin Iannarelli, FBLA Chapter Community Service Director, sold 10 tickets. All together we sold 75 tickets and raised $900 for Pediatric Cancer Foundation. PCF Executive Director, Nancy Joselson, who attended this event said, “I am awed by the energy and spirit of the FBLA. Somehow this group understands that the beneficiaries of this fundraiser are a group of young children who have to spend their days in isolation and wait for a cure to their disease. This money will help fund research that will eventually cure these children.” The greatest gift to give is the gift of hope. Next year please support these children and their families by purchasing a ticket to our next Flapjack Breakfast Fundraiser for Pediatric Cancer Foundation, hosted at the New Rochelle Applebees. With your help we can save these children and bring an end to Cancer once and for all.”
