THE CULTURE MOM It’s hard to keep up with Holly Rosen Fink, a.k.a. “The Culture Mom.” This week the Larchmont mother is busy getting her two kids back to Chatsworth Avenue school while starting a new job with Ruckus Media and maintaining a popular blog devoted to her passion, culture. Before moving to Larchmont in 2002, Holly lived in Manhattan where she had immediate access to theater, museums, and other cultural institutions. Part of the attraction of moving to Larchmont, besides the scenic waterfront, was the easy commute to New York City to get her cultural fix. Holly attends at least two cultural events a week and blogs about her experiences. She also travels extensively with her family and makes a point of visiting and blogging about culture around the world. Closer to home, she's explored Westchester's cultural offerings, including the Emelin Theater, Pelham Picture House, Tarrytown Music Hall, and the Jacob Burns Film Center where she volunteers. Holly is also a huge fan of the Larchmont Library and its creative programming. Through her blog, Holly hopes to expose people, particularly children, to the wonderful world of culture. NEVER FORGET 12 neighbors from Larchmont and Mamaroneck perished in the September 11th terrorist attacks. On Saturday at 10 a.m., a ceremony at the Girl Scout’s 9/11 Memorial Rock will mark the Ninth Anniversary and pay tribute to those who lost their lives that day.

PIZZA PARTY The Larchmont Newcomers Club kicks off a new season of events on Sunday. Join the Newcomers at Flint Park for a pizza party from noon to 2 p.m. Register here.

CLARKE’S AUCTION GALLERY Clark’s Auction Gallery Inc. is staying in Larchmont! After renting space on North Avenue for 12 years, owner Ronan Clarke purchased and renovated a building at 2372 Boston Post Road. This Sunday Clark’s Auction Gallery is holding a Grand Opening Auction to celebrate. Larchmont Mayor Josh Mandell will be on hand at 2 p.m. to auction off the first lot with proceeds to benefit Marie Ferrari Children’s Hospital. TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER Train commuters and other pedestrians walking on Chatsworth Avenue on Thursday evening had to do a double take. Was that really a robot cruising down the street headed into Pascal’s Restaurant? Yes, it really was. The robot is the creation of Robert Doornick, an uncle to Renee Powell, the owner of Pascal’s Restaurant. Robert was six years old when inspiration hit him. He was sitting in a Paris theater watching a cartoon with an evil robot. It was at this moment he knew that he would build his own robot--a friendly one! Today Robert is the Founder and President of International Robotics, Inc., a Larchmont based company leading the Techno-Marketing industry and specializing in Communication Robots for over thirty years. Robert’s robots Sico and the latest generation robot Millennia travel all over the world to entertain at major events hosted by Fortune 500 Companies and a variety of industries. Sico even landed a role in the movie Rocky IV. Robert, who started his career in special education, loves to bring the robots to schools as part of his “If You Can Dream” program. YOGOBERRY Joanne Lee (shown between employees Lara Lopez-Cano and Charlotte Cwikowski) choose Larchmont for her third YogoBerry store and opened her doors last week. YogoBerry, located at 2114 Boston Post Road, serves non-fat, kosher certified frozen yogurt. The healthy frozen yogurt comes in several flavors with the chocolate/vanilla and strawberry/vanilla original swirls being the most popular ones. The toppings range from seasonal fruit toppings (including some Japanese specialties) to more unique toppings like fruity pebbles cereal, crushed sugar wafers and fig newtons. CUT FOR A CAUSE Gisele Guerrero and her stylist Sheila Fernandes continue next month with their mission of providing “Hair Cuts for Hope” at Hope Community Services. They are calling on the Community to donate toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, hairbrushes, tooth paste, deodorant, razors, shaving cream and soap) for those in need. Donations may be dropped off at Gisele’s Salon at 141 Larchmont Avenue between now and September 11th. Gisele conducts “Hair Cuts for Hope” every two months and Larchmont restaurants, including Auray Gourmet and Tequila Sunrise, have donated lunch at Hope Community Services. WELCOME WAGON

NEW DELI The deli space at 135 Chatsworth Avenue is under new management. John Grasso, who owns an Ambulette Service Company with an office in Larchmont, recently purchased the Chatsworth Deli & Bakery from Edwin and Amy Estacio. This week John is unveiling a new name and details for a future grand opening celebration. The Hawthorne bachelor loves to cook and eat and intends to focus on serving delicious homestyle cooking at reasonable prices. The breakfast crowd will enjoy the popular H&H Bagels with a wide assortment of flavored cream cheeses from which to choose. You can also enjoy a free cup of coffee with every breakfast sandwich purchase. Over the coming months, John will announce other specials including “Prince Spaghetti Day” every Wednesday. One thing that won’t change is the presence of former Kearns Deli owner, Jim Kearns. He’ll be managing the day to day operations and cooking his favorite gumbo dish. The deli is open Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Extended and Sunday hours are expected in the fall.

MEMORY LANE Larchmont author and Huffington Post blogger Kate Kelly Schweitzer takes a walk down Memory Lane on Wednesday with a talk entitled “Remember When…?” Kate, a history buff, reminds the audience of how our lives have changed for better or worse. The event, hosted by At Home on the Sound, will be held at St. John & Paul Church’s Rectory Meeting Room from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Learn more about Kate on her website.

DOG DAYS Hot. Sticky. Uncomfortable. The "Dog Days of Summer" are upon us. This week Larchmont Dish, with the help of local business owners, provides a Survival Guide with strategies for staying cool, avoiding bad hair days, and other useful tips to make it through muggy August.

GOT FRIZZ? There’s nothing like a little humidity to give you crazy hair. Gisele Guerrero from Gisele’s Salon advises that you leave a little conditioner or Moroccan oil in your hair. For a natural treatment, she suggests putting a dime size drop of light Olive Oil in your palm and then rubbing it into the hair bottom up. You can also stop by the salon and try out the new “Brazilian Blow Out" for smooth, healthy and frizz free hair. This month’s special price ranges from $200 to $300.

BEACH BOUND? Judy Graham recommends two great products for the beach: Mama Mio’s Lucky Legs cooling gel and Mario Badescu rosewater facial spray. Keep them in a cooler and they’ll keep you cool throughout the day. Both products available at Pink on Palmer.

FLOWER POWER Whether you’re gathering a bunch of flowers from your garden or buying a fresh bouquet from your local florist, humidity can make your flowers wilt fast. Liz Alfieri from Larchmont Floral Designs offers these tips for ensuring that your flowers look healthy and last longer.
• Always cut the stems.
• Place flowers in cold water.
• Change cold water frequently.
• Keep flowers in air conditioned or cool area.
If flowers start to wilt:
• Fill sink with cold water.
• Remove flowers from vase.
• Cut stems and submerge them in sink water for 5 to 10 minutes.
• Cut stems again (the less stem, the longer flowers last).
• Replace flowers in vase with fresh cold water.
• Never spray water on flowers.
Follow these steps and your flowers should last 7 to 10 days.

CHOP! CHOP! Anna Maria Santorelli, the owner of Anna Maria’s Restaurant is having some week. The same day that she was celebrating her fourth anniversary in Larchmont and receiving a New York State citation from Assembly Latimer declaring it “Anna Maria’s Restaurant Day,” she received the phone call for which she was hoping. It was the Food Network calling to let her know that she is a finalist for the television show Chopped hosted by foodie Tim Allen. If chosen, Anna Maria will compete with three other up-and-coming chefs to create extraordinary dishes from everyday ingredients. The winner takes home $10,000 and all the glory that comes with being a celebrity chef. In the meantime, catch Anna Maria today on WVOX (1460 AM) from 11 a.m. to noon. She’s talking food with host Michael Dandry.

BOOK IT Tonight The Bookends Band is performing at Memorial Park, 7 p.m. The band started back in the late '70s at a bar in New Rochelle. After a 20-year hiatus, they reunited and have been playing again ever since. Expect an evening of music from the Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Cat Stevens and James Taylor. More on the band here.

ROCK REUNION Larchmonter Trevor McKay decided to bring together a group of his musical friends for a concert Thursday night in Flint Park. The evening kicks off at 6 p.m. with a performance by Sell the Children, a local teen rock band featuring Jesse Barovick, Luna Slater and Liz Correto. Closing the night, several members of the Dwellers band, including Mamaroneck High School alumni Johnny Andriani and Robert Ferraro, will play with Rosalie Login. They’ll be playing songs from the Dwellers' '90s album “Whatever Makes You Happy” including popular hit Rocket Ride. Trevor McKay himself may be making an appearance on the keyboards. BERMUDA, BAHAMAS, LARCHMONT And the Summer Concert Series continues! Tonight Memorial Park transforms into a tropical paradise as Jimmy and the Parrots hit the stage at 7 p.m. The popular Jimmy Buffet cover band will be playing Buffet favorites along with songs from the Beach Boys, Bob Marley, Paul Simon, and many others. MORE VEGGIES In addition to the Larchmont Farmers’ Market held each Saturday at the train station, Community Markets is launching a Mamaroneck Farmers’ Market on Tuesdays at Harbor Island Park. Beginning this Tuesday, the new market is open from 1:30 p.m to 6:30 p.m. through November 23.

ISLAM LECTURE On September 11, 2001 Mark Fichtel, a Larchmont resident and President of the New York Coffee, Sugar, and Cocoa Exchange, bolted from his building with a fleeing crowd. The next day he had his exchange up and running. Six months later he quit his job to study and teach Islam. This Wednesday Mark is holding a lecture entitled, “Islam: Quo Vadis” to trace the growth of Islam from its emergence in the Arabian Peninsula in the 7th century through the 1600s, as well as to discuss the challenges facing Islam today. The lecture is sponsored by At Home on the Sound and will be held in the Sts. John & Paul Church Rectory Room at 3:30 p.m. More info here.

MOVE OVER MARTHA Larchmonter Colleen Mullaney, the author and lifestyle guru is making the rounds signing her two new books, The Stylish Girl’s Guide to Fabulous Cocktails and for wee ones, Fairy Parties. Nantucket Lemonade
Serves 12
5 cups lemonade
2 cups cranberry juice
¼ cup lime juice
3 cups vodka
2 cups ginger ale
4 cups ice cubes
Frozen cranberries and lemon wheels to garnish
Combine the lemonade, cranberry juice, lime juice, and vodka in the punch bowl and mix well. Add the ice cubes, pour in ginger ale, add the frozen cranberries and lemon wheels and serve.

HELLO SAILOR Hundreds of sailors are converging on Larchmont this week for the 112th Annual Race Week hosted by Larchmont Yacht Club. Sailors are racing on the Long Island Sound through Sunday. View all the action from Manor Park.
SUMMER CONCERTS Tonight T-Ray & The Smokin’ Section (now known as New York Uproar) kick off the summer concert series at Memorial Park. FEELIN' BLUE Larchmonter and Dish Tweep Alex Oppenheimer was caught checking out the blueberries at the Larchmont Meateria. July is National Blueberry Month, and the popular summer fruit can be found in abundance at local markets. Alex, who counts blueberries as one of her favorite treats, knows a little something about eating healthy. She is currently a dietetic intern at New York Presbyterian Hospital and hopes to be a full-fledged registered dietitian by next Spring. In other blue news, little ones ages 3 to 5 are invited to learn more about blueberries at the Larchmont Library this Wednesday. The Blueberry Storytime features Robert McCloskey's beloved classic, Blueberries for Sal. There will also be a blueberry juice painting project and of course, a blueberry snack!

WHERE'S DAVE Lead singer Bill Steely and his band Where's Dave are kicking off the summer concert series at Flint Park this Thursday from 7:15 p.m. to 9 p.m. Pack a picnic and enjoy an evening of folk inspired music. Sample Bill's music here.

STARS & STRIPES FOREVER If you’re hanging out in Larchmont for the holiday, there’s plenty of Fourth of July fun to be found. For kids ages three to six, head over to the Larchmont Library on Friday morning for the Fourth of July Wand Parade. There will be patriotic stories and a red, white & blue sparkling wand craft followed by a parade around the library. On Sunday, families are invited to Flint Park for the annual running races. Free hotdogs and fun activities are planned. Later that day, Manor Park Beach members can enjoy a traditional All American Barbecue by the water. And finally, join the Dixie Dandies in Manor Park that evening for a free concert. In addition to enjoying some Dixieland-style jazz, you’ll be able to watch fireworks from neighboring communities.

THE WELCOME WAGON

BURN Personal trainer Rob DelliPaoli is fond of asking his clients, “Can you feel the burn?” Thus the inspiration behind his new personal training studio Burn opening this Friday on Addison Street. The Rye native chose Larchmont for his first studio because of its close proximity to his existing client base. He hopes to open more “Burn” studios in the future. What differentiates Burn from the competition? According to Rob, it’s the great value and flexibility that Burn offers its members. There are no contracts. Members can choose from several membership levels; the higher the level, the more discounted the price. Or you don’t have to be a member at all and can pay for classes and training sessions as you go. In addition to personal training sessions, Burn offers a variety of classes including kickboxing, pilates, yoga, and belly dancing. Rob’s mom Liana is a professional belly dancer with thirty years of experience and will be leading the belly dancing classes. ART FOR ANIMALS This week the Mamaroneck Artists’ Guild hosts a special exhibit for animal lovers. The “Art for Animals/Animals in Art” exhibit opens on Wednesday and runs through Saturday. Gallery hours are 12 p.m. to 5 pm. On Friday evening, a champagne reception and live auction are being held to raise funds for Pet Rescue and the Mamaroneck Artists' Guild. STROLL The Larchmont Newcomers Club is holding a historic stroll through Larchmont Manor on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Pier Wittek from the Larchmont Historical Society will lead the discussion.
