LARCHMONT GETS CREATIVE On Saturday Larchmont celebrates creativity at the 9th Annual Larchmont Arts Festival. Over 60 artists from Westchester County will be on hand to display and sell their “one of a kind” creations. Organizers of this year’s Larchmont Arts Festival have chosen Larchmont native Kristin McElroy to be the featured artist. Larchmont Dish sat down with Kristin to discuss this honor and find out what inspires her art. Creative talent is clearly in Kristin’s genes. Both her parents were artists, and she was encouraged to create at an early age. Kristin gives high marks to Mamaroneck High School’s art program and has fond memories of her art teacher John Murray, who helped her put together her first art portfolio. She went on to graduate from the Rhode Island School of Design and had a very exciting design and styling career in New York City working for the likes of Adrienne Vittadini, Waverly and Martex. When marriage and children followed, it was time to move back to the ‘burbs. Since returning to Larchmont in 2001, Kristin has made friends with other Larchmont artists through art classes at Westchester Community College and even the Chatsworth Avenue School. The artists get together frequently to attend art galleries and critique each other’s work. In terms of style, Kristin considers herself a figurative painter. She works both with oils and watercolor and prefers large
canvases. Her favorite subjects are family and friends captured in everyday, mundane situations-- perhaps inspired by one of her favorite artists Johannes Vermeer, who was known for painting ordinary people in domestic scenes. Kristin has a loose style of painting with noticeable brush strokes and lately has become interested in showing motion in her paintings. The Larchmont Arts Festival poster, featuring Kristin’s painting of a swimmer, is a good example of this technique. The upcoming festival is Kristin's second public showing of her work. Earlier this year, she held a joint show at Iona College with her dear friend Patricia Horing, another figurative painter from Larchmont.. The Larchmont Arts Festival runs from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Constitution Park. If there is rain on Saturday, the event will be moved to Sunday. Be sure to stop by Kristin's booth while you're there. DUE TO RAIN, LARCHMONT ARTS FESTIVAL IS POSTPONED UNTIL SUNDAY. More

350 YEARS …A TIME TO CELEBRATE Back in 1661, a London merchant named John Richbell shelled out a supply of tools, kettles, clothing and wampum to purchase the land from the Siwanoy Indians that we now know as Mamaroneck. 350 years later, a celebration is in order. The festivities begin on Friday when local firefighters from the town and villages take to the field to play a softball game at Harbor Island, 7 p.m. On Saturday, swing by the Larchmont Farmers’ Market to watch an apple press demonstration and sample some fresh apple cider. There will also be commemorative t-shirts on sale. The celebration closes on Sunday with a big parade marching from Central School down Palmer Avenue towards Larchmont and ending in Memorial Park where there will be a picnic with games, music and entertainment. Details available on the Town of Mamaroneck's website. More
