JLWOS WANTS YOU! Are you interested in getting more involved in your community? The Junior League of Westchester on the Sound (JLWOS) wants to meet you! JLWOS is hosting an information session this WEDNESDAY, 7:30 p.m. at Espana Wine and Tapas Bar. You’ll get to meet some of the 50 new members who recently volunteered their time to redecorate a pediatric waiting room of a local hospital, paint a mural at a library and renovate a nearby Guidance Center. In addition to these community projects and others like it, JLWOS operates The Golden Shoestring Thift Shop on Larchmont Avenue (pictured JLWOS Volunteers Alice Gargone and Mary Cox). Joining JLWOS is a great way to make new friends and do good works. For more information, visit the JLWOS website or stop by WEDNESDAY’s event.

BLIND DISH Which local restaurant manager is taking over a nearby grocery store? Plans are underway to give the space a much needed facelift.
THE WELCOME WAGON
THE FOOD BASKET Food Horizon on Chatsworth Avenue has new owners, and you may recognize the faces. Steve Reyes is currently the manager at Lusardi’s, where he has worked for the past ten years and his wife Pichaya used to work at Encore Bistro. The young couple moved to Larchmont six years ago and absolutely fell in love with the village. They love it so much that they decided to establish some roots by owning a business here. Food Horizon (renamed The Food Basket) has always been a popular destination for Larchmonters to purchase convenience items. The Reyes didn’t want to disrupt their customers by shutting down the store for lengthy renovations. Instead they did some quick improvements (fresh paint and brighter lights) during off hours and will continue to gradually renovate the interior and exterior of the store over the next year. What’s different about The Food Basket? The Reyes are committed to selling quality products. Steve wakes in the wee hours to head to Hunts Point where he hand selects the fruits and vegetables. His keen eye for quality he attributes to his mom. She taught him all about choosing the best fruits and vegetables during their trips to the market together when he was a child. This week Steve hired a new butcher who will be offering quality cuts of meat like filet mignon and steaks. There’s also fresh fish available including salmon, fluke and flounder. The same chef will stay on but has been given the green light to create a wider variety of prepared foods, including some ethnic dishes. The deli will offer additional sandwich options and fresh breads. Steve and Pichaya are pleasers and want to create a welcoming environment for their customers. They are eager for feedback, and so far their customers haven’t held back! One customer wanted a fresh baquette. Done! A few customers requested a unique Asian fruit, persimmon. Done! So if there's something you really are looking for, don't hesitate to tell them. One last thing to mention. In between working at Lusardi’s and The Food Basket, Steve is a Larchmont volunteer firefighter. Don't be surprised if you see him running out with his gear to battle a local fire. He loves volunteering, and yet another example of the pride his takes in his new hometown, Larchmont. Visit The Food Basket at 112 Chatsworth Avenue. Open seven days a week, 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. except Sundays when closing time is 6 p.m.
