2000 OR BUST Jennie McFarland (pictured on the far left with the Santa hat) is a woman on a mission. Since 2006, she’s organized Operation Support Our Troops, an effort to bring holiday cheer to men and women serving in the armed services overseas. As the wife of a Marine who served in Iraq, Jennie knows first hand the importance of letters and care packages in lifting the spirits of the troops. Back in 2006, Jennie and a group of volunteers gathered at St. Augustine’s Church to assemble 190 care packages. Over the years, the effort has grown substantially with the community coming out in full force to donate and volunteer their time. Every year Jennie ups the ante by increasing the care package goal. This SUNDAY from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Jennie and her volunteers hope to assemble a record 2000 care packages. Interested in helping? Donate items (see a suggested list here) or money to cover postage (each box costs $12.95 to ship). Or come to St. Augustine’s on SUNDAY to help pack boxes. For more information, contact Jennie at jennie.mcfarland@verizon.net.
